Using Pest Control to Get Rid of Cockroaches

The topic of insects is something that gives many people the heebie-jeebies. While numerous people have a fear of spiders, centipedes and even ants, the real bug to fear is the cockroach. Roaches are vile and contemptuous little creatures. Not only do they have a somewhat creepy appearance, but they are also laden with disease! Of the more than four thousand species ofcockroaches found throughout the world, the most common to invade living spaces are the American and German varieties. An American roach is also sometimes called a Palmetto Bug, particularly in southern states, such as Florida. All species of this insect can be a nuisance, but the German variety is the type likely to take over your kitchen.

This fast moving bug is approximately ½ inch in length although some get considerably bigger. While they do have wings, unlike their American cousin they cannot fly. They can sustain a myriad of living conditions, including complete depletion of oxygen for at least 30 minutes and often much longer. According to the University of Massachusetts, they can even live without a head for approximately a month. This gives you an idea of just how tough it would be to get rid of an infestation without proper pest control procedures.

Perhaps someone reading this will think, well... a bug is just a bug, right? Not in this case. The cockroach can harbor various bacterium and parasites within its gastrointestinal tract. The feces can make its way into food, onto utensils or even onto bare skin. Particles can also be inhaled along with everyday household dust. Inhaling this matter continuously can even cause asthma. It is imperative to speak with someone in the pest control industry at the first sign of a problem so no ill effects are experienced by anyone in the house.

Signs of an infestation include the appearance of roaches during daylight hours. As these critters like to sleep during the day and scavenge at night, the appearance of one (or more) in broad daylight could indicate a huge problem. Another place you might see them is in a dark room at night.

You walk in the bathroom, flip the light switch and see a couple scurrying off in different directions. Whether you have seen several or just one, calling a pest control company should be your top priority. A female cockroach can lay 400 eggs in a year. The offspring reproduce, and then their offspring reproduce. A small problem quickly becomes a huge one.
